The Government of Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan for 2021 hopes to welcome 401,000 permanent residents into the country with the intent of creating new jobs and powering long-term growth and development. With this in mind, the government has made a new announcement this week. Canada plans to enable an accelerated pathway for over 90,000 essential workers and international graduates to gain permanent residency in the country. This innovative pathway is a big boost to the essential workers and international graduates who have been an active part of Canada’s growth, especially post-pandemic. Temporary workers in healthcare and other select essential occupations and international graduates who are already in Canada and possess the skills and experience required to fight the pandemic and can contribute to speeding up the recovery of the Canadian economy will now have permanent status in the country.
How does this move benefit international graduates? Canada is looking to accept 40,000 applications from international graduates who have graduated from a Canadian educational institution no earlier than January 2017 (20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care and 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other select essential occupations are also being accepted). These application streams will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until they have reached their limit. The educational credential could be from a Canadian university, college, or from a trade/technical school. Educational credentials would include an Associate’s degree, a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree or a Doctorate. Graduates of a trade/technical program who hold a degree, diploma, certificate or attestation will also be considered eligible as long as the credential leads to the occupation of a skilled trade as specified by the governing rules.
20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care and 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other select essential occupations are also being accepted.
